On Documentaries: ‘Give a Damn?’ and ‘Capturing Reality’
July 7, 2009 – 8:56 am
I recently gave tweet to an ongoing documentary called Give a Damn? about “an idealist activist who convinces his friend who doesn’t give a damn about the poor to go to Africa and try and live on $1 a day”.
So short of donating or buying merch, the only way I can contribute to the project is give a little link love to Give a Damn? and by serving up another link to the team that maybe they’ll check out after all the footage is shot and have a brief moment to possibly find inspiration and/or help hone their craft. That link is a documentary about documentaries called Capturing Reality: The Art of Documentary.
Dozens of documentary filmmakers discuss everything under the sun related to — sometimes cut and dry, other times only vaguely — well, documentary film making. The end result, at least on the website, shows interviews enlarged and played back in Flash so that it looks like you’re viewing them through a screen door.
Anyway, best of luck the Give a Damn? folks. Follow their progress on Twitter at @giveadamndoc and visit the website. Thanks to kottke.org for pointing out Capturing Reality.
